Our Story
The Town That Boomed
In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt joined rancher Samuel "Burk" Burnett — whose legendary 6666 Ranch covered much of North Texas — for a wolf hunt in the Big Pasture. When Kemp and Kell's town lot sale on June 6, 1907 founded a new city along their railroad, Roosevelt himself suggested it be named for his host.
Then came July 1918: the Fowler well blew in a gusher, and a forest of derricks rose over Main Street almost overnight. The oil-crazy days were dramatized in story and song — and in the Clark Gable & Spencer Tracy movie Boomtown. Burkburnett still merits its name: "Boomtown, USA!"
